4 Things You Don't Need In Your Skincare Routine

Oct 10, 2023

There are a lot of products you should use for a good morning and evening skincare routine, but what about the fluff?

The skincare and beauty industry is full of countless accessories, tools, and, most of all, products. Between moisturizers, cleansers, serums, essences, masks, toners, retinol, actives, and more, it is hard to know really what is necessary and what isn’t.

It’s important to ask ourselves, “Does our skin really need all of these products?” Of course, many steps in a skincare routine are essential to achieve our skincare goals, but is a 10-or-more-step regimen necessary?

In today’s world, everyone has an opinion, and many products are being shoved down our throats. Between social media, magazines, and other forms of content, it’s hard to know what really lives up to the hype and what is just fluff.

We know it might sound a little ironic to hear this from a beauty brand that sells skincare products and tools, but we’re here to help you sort it out. Today, we’re getting back to the skincare routine basics. We’re diving into which products aren’t essential in your morning and nighttime routines and which ones you should consider keeping on board.

4 Things You Don’t Need in Your Skincare Routine

Save your beauty bucks for essential things. Here are five skincare products you don’t need:

  • A Morning Double Cleansing Cleanser — Double cleansing is an important step during your nighttime routine. However, it isn’t necessary for your morning or daytime skincare routine. At night, you’re likely removing makeup, SPF, oil buildup, and other pollutants, making cleansing twice beneficial. But, for your morning routine, you’re really only removing the skincare products you applied the night before.
  • Nighttime Sun Protection — Sun protection is one of the vital skincare steps in your morning skincare regimen, but it’s entirely unnecessary for a nighttime routine. That is unless you’re planning on sleeping under the sun’s rays. Skip the SPF at night, and save it for your morning routines. Don’t forget to reapply it throughout the day.
  • Single-Use Makeup Remover Wipes or Cotton Rounds — Single-use makeup remover wipes and cotton rounds are significant sources of waste! There are many more environmentally-conscious ways to apply micellar water or remove your makeup. You can find reusable options that are washable and much better for our earth!
  • Over-Priced Products — This applies to morning and nighttime routines: something utterly unnecessary in your skincare routines is overly expensive products. Surely you’ve seen on social media or magazines advertising $100 to $500 or more (no, unfortunately, we are not joking or exaggerating!) designer face cream. While this might seem luxurious, it’s completely unnecessary; especially considering there are countless creams that essentially do the same thing for a fraction of the price.

Skincare Routine Basics Must-Haves

Now that we’ve outlined what you don’t need, here are a few steps in a skincare routine that you shouldn’t skip out on:

  • Morning SPF — As mentioned, sunscreen isn’t a necessary step during your nighttime routine, but when it comes to your daytime skincare routine, SPF might be the most important part! Regularly wearing sunscreen is the best and most effective way to avoid problems such as skin cancer and premature aging, like age spots and wrinkles. Yes, even if you don’t plan to leave your house, you should wear it every morning and reapply as needed.
  • Nighttime Double Cleanse — Cleansing twice at night is an integral part of every K-beauty routine and is recommended by dermatologists and aestheticians. The double cleanse aids in thoroughly removing acne-causing impurities: water-based cleansers dissolve the water-based contaminants, while oil cleansers dissolve oil-based impurities.
  • A Good, Hydrating Moisturizer — Like us, moisturizers come in many shapes and forms, like lotions, emulsions, creams, gels, and sleeping masks. Your specific skin type will determine the type of moisturizer you need.
  • Chemical ExfoliantsChemically exfoliating your skin two to three times a week can expedite the cell turnover process and deep clean your pores. This makes your skin look brighter and smoother and improves the absorption and efficacy of your other skincare products.
  • Serums and Other Treatments Serums, toners, ampoules, boosters, essences, and other treatments are great at targeting specific skin concerns, like acne, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines. Depending on your skincare goals, you may use several treatments during your morning and/or nighttime routines, such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, retinol, peptides, snail mucin, and more. That said, if the treatment isn’t targeting something important to you, it may not be necessary for your routine.
