Serum and Moisturizer: Do I Need Them Both?

Serum and Moisturizer: Do I Need Them Both?

Aug 17, 2022

Understanding the differences between serum and moisturizer and knowing when and how to use them can take your skincare routine to the next level.

With the astounding amount of skincare products available on the market today, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and, frankly, kind of confused at how — and why — each of them is used. To some, a multistep regimen might seem redundant, but each step and product play an important role in taking care of your skin.

Today, we’re taking a deep dive into two integral products that should be a part of every morning and night skincare routine: serums and moisturizers.

Serum and Moisturizer: Yes! You Need Them Both!

Despite what you may have heard, yes! You should use various serums and moisturizers in your skin care regimen in the morning and at night. Let’s look into their similarities, differences, and how and when to use each.

What Are Face Serums?

A face serum is a skincare product infused with many beneficial ingredients and vital nutrients to help your skin stay healthy, repair and regenerate, and increase the skin cell turnover rate. When the cellular turnover rate increases, your skin will look and feel much healthier and softer and appear more radiant and youthful.

Serums are typically jam-packed with beneficial ingredients to improve the health of your skin, such as:

  • Vitamin C: Vitamin C helps boost collagen production (a critical cellular compound that helps your cells regenerate faster and create new cells to replace the dead ones). It helps protect the skin from many issues such as hyperpigmentation, sunburn, dryness, uneven skin tone, wrinkles, and more.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: HA is an excellent moisturizing agent that helps seal in moisture and aids in hydrating the skin.
  • Antioxidants: Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that cause passive damage to your skin while lowering their regenerative capabilities.
  • Lactic Acid: Lactic acid tackles dark spots on your skin.
  • Glycolic Acid: Glycolic acid aids in brightening the appearance of your skin.
  • Niacinamide: Niacinamide helps visibly minimize and tighten enlarged pores, softens fine lines and wrinkles, improves uneven skin tone, diminishes dullness, and more.
  • Retinols: Retinol, also known as Vitamin A, is a popular anti-aging ingredient that promotes the production of collagen and elastin in your cells, making your skin appear more supple and firm.

While face serums contain compounds and ingredients that can help hydrate your skin, they are not moisturizing products.

What Are Moisturizers?

A moisturizer is a specialized product intended to seal in existing moisture to your skin and make it more difficult for moisture to evaporate during the day. Moisturizers can share the same ingredients as a face serum, like caimans, minerals, and hydrating agents.

Moisturizers come in various formulas and are made to tackle different conditions and skin issues. Whether you have dry, oily, normal, or combo skin, a moisturizer is an essential step in your skincare routine. But it’s important to understand that a moisturizer that’s good for dry skin may not be ideal for someone with oily skin.

Serums VS. Moisturizers

If you read that and thought, “Well, these two products sound very similar.” We know; they do sound similar. However, they serve different purposes.

Face serums are meant to nourish and revitalize the skin. Yes, some products can have moisturizing properties, but a serum is not nearly as effective as a moisturizer dedicated to delivering moisture.

Face serums cannot replace moisturizers, and a moisturizer will not give your skin the additional vitamins and nutrients necessary to keep your skin looking glowy, smooth, and youthful.

Why Everyone Should Use a Face Serum and Moisturizer

Everyone should incorporate a serum and moisturizer in their daily routines. If smoother, younger-looking skin is a part of your skincare goals, you’ll want to integrate several face serums. The nourishing vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients increase the health of your skin across the board.

You can address most cellular deficiencies in your skin with a face serum. When your skin does not have access to the proper nutrients and vitamins, it cannot create enough collagen and elastin to produce healthy new cells, resulting in dull-looking skin covered in fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes. Face serums offer your skin cells a boost in the necessary building blocks to create healthy skin.

A daily moisturizer can reduce the likelihood of extreme oiliness or dryness. Both extremes can be detrimental to your skin and can result in common skin conditions like flakiness, acne, overproduction of oil, and more. Moisturizer is an essential step in maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier and helps prevent environmental damage to the skin.

When to Use Serum and Moisturizer in Your Skincare Routine

Face serums should be a part of your morning and nighttime skincare routines, which is great because there are so many beneficial serums to use; you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use them.

Some people use the same serums morning and night; however, this isn’t necessary. Instead, you can mix up the serums you use during each routine. Use two or three of your favorite serums in the morning, such as your Vitamin C and antioxidant serums. Then at nighttime, use a few different ones, like hyaluronic acid and actives.

As for moisturizers, every routine should include a moisturizer because it will seal in all your other products. Complete your morning routine with a moisturizer and then an SPF. Your nighttime regimen can end with just the moisturizer. Some people have a morning moisturizing product and a separate nighttime one. This isn’t necessary but a preference of the user.
