If you want to build a maintainable skincare routine that you can do morning and night, this article is for you!
Three steps are essential for a good skincare routine:
- The products themselves
- The order in which you apply them
- Remaining consistent with your regimen
Quality products are key for an effective skincare routine, especially if you expect to see results. But these excellent products won’t do much if you don’t use them in the correct order, even if they are the best skincare products available on the market. You won’t see the results you want if you don’t use these products consistently.
Building a maintainable skincare routine that you are committed to doing morning and night is essential. While many people start out dedicated to a regimen, they’ll get burned out if it is too involved or requires too many steps.

The Basics of Your Skincare Routine
A skincare routine can be super involved and include nine or more steps, especially when you get into the world of Korean skincare. While each of those nine steps does a lot for your skin, three of them are considered to be the core steps that every skincare routine should include:
- Double Cleansing
- Moisturizing
- SPF in the morning
These three skincare routine steps are a maintainable regimen that should keep your skin clear, hydrated, and protected from the sun. If you have other skincare goals, like brightening your complexion or diminishing the look of fine lines and wrinkles, you’ll want to add additional steps to your routine and use the best skincare products you can get your hands on.
8 Steps You Can Include in Your Skincare Routine
We get it; unless you’re a skincare enthusiast, a lot of routine steps might not be realistic or maintainable. Depending on your skincare needs and goals, pick and choose any other steps to go along with the core skincare steps we discussed above, and leave the rest! Here are the skincare routine steps to build from:
- Remove Your Makeup — Every skincare regimen should include removing makeup, pollutants, SPF, oil-based impurities, and any other buildup from the day. An excellent method to eliminate all of these is an oil cleanser. This should be the first step of your nighttime routine. You do not need to do this in the morning unless you forget to wash off your makeup the night before.
- Gently Cleanse — You’ll want a water-based cleanser or face wash for the second step of your double cleanse.
Remember, like will dissolve like, meaning oil-based cleansers tackle oil-based impurities, like sebum and oil-based makeup. In contrast, water-based cleaners will remove water-based impurities that your oil cleanser missed, like dirt and sweat.
Include this step in your morning and nighttime routine. - Chemically Exfoliate Your Skin — If you hope to achieve glowy, flawless skin, a deep-pore clean and the removal of dead skin cells is crucial!
By using a chemical exfoliant up to three times a week, you can expedite the cell turnover process and deep clean pores, making your skin look brighter and smoother! Alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids are great chemical exfoliants. Moreover, exfoliating improves the absorption and efficacy of your other skincare products.
Do this step at night after double cleansing. Exfoliating too much will cause skin irritation, so exfoliating should only happen one to three times each week. So, choose a day and exfoliate once weekly. Then, after a couple of weeks, increase your usage to twice weekly or every three or four days. You can stop there if you see the results you want. If you want to increase your use of it three times weekly, you can after another couple of weeks. - Treatments — Apply serums, ampoules, toners, essences, boosters, and any other treatments that contain ingredients targeting specific skin concerns, like acne, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines. These products are most effective when applied from thinnest to thickest in consistency. You might have several treatments you use, such as antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, retinol, peptides, and more.
These products can be used in the morning after cleansing and at night after exfoliating. However, some products, such as vitamin C, need to be used in the morning, while others only at night, like retinol. Speaking of retinol, you’ll want to ease your way up to using it regularly, similar to chemical exfoliants. - Sheet Masks — Sheet masks are a luxurious way to experience and apply your skincare products. Sheet masks, and masks in general, allow your skin prolonged contact with the product, letting the nutrients absorb thoroughly. Most masks can be worn for 10 to 30 minutes, allowing you much-needed R and R.
Sheet masks do not need to be used daily, but there’s no harm in using them regularly. For best results, use various sheet masks throughout the week. Some people prefer to use these at night, but if you want to show off the immediate glowy effects of the mask, use them in the morning before finishing your routine. - Eye Creams — The skin surrounding your eyes is unlike any other skin on your face. It is delicate and thin and requires a special product that is exceptionally hydrating, gentle, and non-irritating. Eye creams are concentrated with ultra-beneficial ingredients that help to reduce puffiness, fine lines, and dark circles.
Use eye creams morning and night. You can use the same one morning and night, or you can use two that do different things. For example, your morning one could contain SPF, while your nighttime eye cream might be heavier and creamier. - Moisturizer — Moisturizers are essential to locking in moisture, smoothing fine lines, and helping plump the skin. Many different moisturizers are available, and the one you select will depend on your skin type.
Do this step morning and night. - SPF — Exposure to the sun’s rays is critical for vitamin D absorption and the release of serotonin. That said, these rays can be incredibly harmful. Applying a quality sunscreen is the best, most effective way to protect your skin.
Apply every morning before applying makeup. Reapply throughout the day as necessary.
